Big Cedar Golf and Country Club

As this warm weather carries through into mid November (thankfully!), it got me thinking back to this summer, when we moved into our new home. When we first moved up to Innisfil, we had the welcome wagon drop by. They provided us with a package that contained little gifts from businesses in the area. In that package, there was a free 9 hole golf pass at Big Cedar. I’m not a good golfer by any means. I have played in the past but saying I was terrible, would be a compliment! I wanted to find out how this course measures up against others, so I sent in the professionals…my in laws. They have golfed all over North America and thoroughly enjoy every aspect of the game.
This has been a very busy year for our family and free time had become almost non-existent. I gave them the pass in the summer but because of all the events we needed to attend, they were not able to visit until the end of the golf season. Despite the weather being very cold that day, they were not going to pass up on this opportunity.  Upon arrival, they noticed that the course was very low key and quiet because of the weather. The gentlemen who were manning the registration desk, were pleasant and friendly. They received a warm welcome and asked if they were there to play 9 or 18 holes. They gave them a detailed explanation on how the course at Big Cedar is set up, to help them make a decision, on how many holes they should play. They decided to play a 9 hole game. The starter was more than helpful, greeting them with friendly banter and explained the tee box placements with care. He also handed them a course book, which is rarely done at other courses.
Typically 9 hole golf courses consist of Par 3 holes that provide minimal challenges for experienced golfers. They were pleasantly surprised that Big Cedar is a well treed course that gives the impression that it is a full sized course. You need to play strategically as the design of the holes, the placement of the ponds and other obstacles can catch you. The course offers a variety at Par 5 and 4. There is also a Par 3 that is over two hundred yards that stretches your golf game. The Par 5 is a challenge for both your long and short game. The greens are small and the surface is hard, so they play very fast. They especially enjoyed the sense of humour on the 6th and 8th hole. There is a sign that says “You are 150 yards from the green and 175 yards from a $500 window. Choose your club carefully.” There are memberships and league play opportunities available as well. Over all, Big Cedar Golf course is a well maintained gem that they would definitely play again.
